Alcohol, Drugs and Crime

Communities across the nation are stepping up in an effort to reduce and prevent harmful alcohol-related criminal activities. Some of the initiatives include public education, alcoholism assessments and treatment programs. As one of the most popular party towns in the country, Sin City certainly contributes heavily to the high alcohol consumption in the state. With an excessive drinking rate of 23.5%, Minneapolis was counted among the Drunkest Cities in America in 2023. In the first few weeks of the lockdown, alcohol sales for off-premise locations jumped 54% and online alcohol sales had increased by 262% compared to sales data from the same week in 2019. From March to September 2020, there were $41.9 billion in liquor store sales, representing an increase of 20% from the same period the previous year.

New York has the third-lowest number of alcohol-related deaths per capita among all U.S. states. New Jersey has the second-lowest number of alcohol-related deaths per capita (Utah has the lowest). New Hampshire has the nation’s lowest rate of under-21 alcohol-related deaths. Mississippi has a high rate of under-21 alcohol-related deaths and the second-highest rate of deaths from acute causes.

In fact, the largest effects in our event study, on the order of 4–6 added crimes per 1,000 population per year, do not come until years after a county first goes wet. As discussed below, we think that this steadily growing effect is attributable to the propagation of liquor availability once a jurisdiction goes wet. A single vote does not mean alcohol is immediately available, and both production and consumption rise as it becomes so.

Because of this, alcohol-related violence and crime rates are on the rise throughout the country. These individuals tend to drink more, socialize with people who drink a lot, and develop a tolerance to alcohol (i.e., it takes more and more alcohol to feel or act intoxicated). Johns Hopkins cites that 48 percent of homicide offenders consumed alcohol directly before the murder, while 37 percent were intoxicated during it. Further, from 2006 to 2010, the CDC found that approximately overcoming alcohol addiction 7,756 homicides annually were linked to excessive alcohol use. It also found that almost half of the offenders were alcohol dependent, although this isn’t actually the same thing – alcohol dependence doesn’t necessarily mean offenders are under the influence of alcohol when incidents happen.

The drug also takes away the thought of any consequences of sexual assault, which is why the rate is so much higher when under intoxicated. In a word, states should refuse to enact any measure that would increase alcohol consumption and particularly consumption methamphetamine withdrawal among young people. At least three specific policy experiments should be considered as means of deepening our understanding of the alcohol-disorder-crime nexus. First, conduct systematic empirical research on alcohol availability and crime.
